CATALOGUE 1044 ART AND ARCHITECTURE AND ILLUSTRATED BOOKS ILLUSTRATED BOOKS 188 GABRIEL [i.e. James Friell]. Original partly-coloured cartoon of Churchill, signed "Gabriel" and with a caption at the foot; mounted ready for framing; size (including mount) 38 x 53cm.; some very slight staining, otherwise very good. £798.00 The cartoon shows Churchill in a Union Flag bathing costume hurriedly swimming away from an enormous shark which has the stars and stripes on its fin. The cartoon was drawn for the Daily Worker, though the exact date is not known to us. James Friell ('Gabriel'), b.1912, was political cartoonist for the Daily Worker from 1936 until 1956, when he left after the Soviet Union invaded Hungary. He then joined the Evening Standard (1957-62), drawing as 'Friell', and he later drew cartoons for consumer-interest programmes on Thames TV. 4to. Biographical Notes
William Makepeace Thackeray
One of the most prolific and beloved novelists of the Victorian Era, William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Alipur, India, on July 18, 1811, the only child of Richmond Thackeray, a successful administrator for the East India Company, and his wife, Anne Becher. Thackeray's father passed away four years later, and young William was sent to boarding school in London. Many of his early experiences in India and later in boarding school found their way into several of his popular works, including Vanity Fair and The Newcomes After his premature departure from Cambridge University and a half-hearted attempt at law school in 1834, Thackeray moved to Paris to concentrate on his art. While studying there, he met and married Isabella Getkin Creach Shawe (1818-1893). The couple had three daughters, Anne Isabella, Harriet Marrian, and Jane who died at age eighteen months. Soon after her daughter's death, Isabella Thackeray suffered a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. Thackeray was then left with the responsibility of raising two young daughters and supporting his wife who would remain in various sanitoriums for the rest of her life.

BOB JONES LIVE - ON - LINE Main Page Diary Writing Poetry ... eMail Bob MY WRITING PAGE - you are very welcome. Here are some extracts from my column in the Hertfordshire Mercury : 'Keeping up with Jones'.
Just a little explanation: Hertfordshire is a county bordering London, United Kingdom, with all the urban pressures it brings.
I'm based in Hertford which is the slightly sleepy, but historic county town. So, at times, my column can be slightly parochial.
It's meant to be entertainment. Read on: Where am I coming from?
I'm being asked all the time: Do I deal with serious social issues, pull people's plonkers, or take the Michael? Am I a satirist or humorist? Do I play safe or take a risk? Am I middle-of-the-road or on-the-edge? Tongue-in-cheek or in-your-face? Do I entertain or am I a bane? The answer is: I wish I knew. Can't a guy have a good time without all these interruptions? So read on . . .
Talking Telephone Numbers
I’d been a BT customer in the bad old days when we all had to be - there was no alternative. When I went into combat with their arrogant customer service ‘If you sign up with us’, said the nice cable salesman back in 1999, ‘I’ll get you a brilliant phone number. And what’s more, it’ll be a palindrome - that means the same number back to front.’ he added, just in case I didn’t know what the word meant. I nodded knowingly but looked it up in the dictionary after he left. ‘You’ll never forget your new number, nor will your friends.’ said he, rubbing his hands as he clinched the deal.
